Introduction
Headaches, fluid retention, and tightness around the chest are all potential symptoms of high blood pressure in women. High blood pressure often presents with no symptoms. However, some women may experience warning signs, which they might mistakenly attribute to stress or hormonal changes. High blood pressure is a significant risk factor for heart disease, the leading cause of death among women, and a primary contributor to kidney failure. Understanding your blood pressure readings and associated risk factors is crucial for maintaining good health.

What is Blood Pressure?

  • Blood pressure measures the force of blood against artery walls.
  • If blood pressure remains consistently high, it strains the heart and damages blood vessels, leading to hypertension.
  • Untreated hypertension can result in severe health issues such as stroke, heart attack, kidney disease, vision impairment, and dementia.

Interpreting Blood Pressure Numbers

  • Normal blood pressure: Below 120/80.
  • Elevated blood pressure: Top number 120–129, bottom number below 80.
  • Elevated at-risk blood pressure: Top number 130–139 or bottom number 80–89, especially if accompanied by other risk factors.
  • High blood pressure: Top number 140 or higher, bottom number 90 or higher.
